Crypto Lists is gearing up crypto enthusiasts for the NearCon occurring in September 2022 in the coastal city of Lisbon, Portugal. The crypto event runs from 11th to 14th September at the Cais da Viscondessa, 1200-109 Lisbon – a few hundred meters from the home of Crypto Lists co-founder Markus Jalmerot in Santos-o-Velho.
Is NearCon in Lisbon worth a visit? Most definitely. Here is why.
NearCon is worthwhile not only for an amazing line up of speakers and networking opportunities, but also to discover the hosting city which is famous for its sunny weather, beautiful buildings, Fado music accompanied by vibrant nightlife, and welcoming English speaking locals to ensure a great experience. The famous landmarks include the Belem Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery, and prominent museums. The city is popular amongst tourists who often acquire a postcard after a photo on the trams. Santos-o-Velho is located just across the train station and up the hill from the NearCon conference.

Visit Santos – The neighbourhood around NearCon
Santos as locals usually call it, or Santos-o-Velho which is the official name, is very popular among both locals and expats. The French embassy is located in the middle of Santos (R. Santos-O-Velho) with lots of cafés, wineries and restaurants. Many French citizens are living in this area, but it’s also an eclectic mix of people from around the world. Many Brits moved here both before and after Brexit. There has also been an influx of people from California and other parts of the U.S in the last few years. An increasing number of Germans, Dutch, Scandinavians, Italians and people from the former Portuguese colonies are also starting to call Santos their home.
Coffee, Lunch or dinner in Santos
If you love coffee and croissants, try La Boulangerie for the best almond croissants in town. For French toasts, Heim Cafe is a personal favourite. Mila is a cafe run by a Portuguese and a British couple, that got lovely smoothies and great atmosphere. Very popular with tourists is also Fauna & Flora, a bit further down a side street. Finally, there is also EleEla with very good coffee.
For lunch, Yallah with Israeli food is a favourite. Zappi also got a good variety of options, even if it’s not genuinely Italian like my favourite Il Matriciano opposite the parliament, 800 meters away.
For dinner, Mattë Lisboa is great for sushi lovers, even if by Koji Lisboa is a good alternative with slightly lower prices. Clube de Jornalistas is cosy and typical Portuguese restaurant, with their own garden and Da Noi is another good alternative those looking for dinner in Santos neighbourhood. If you want to have traditional bacalhau or meat, Café de São Bento is a traditional place that’s been around for 30+ years. Most of the places mentioned above is just 5-10 minutes walk from the NearCon conference.

The blockchain behind NearCon
NearCon is a flagship event from the Near Blockchain. The primary focus on developing the Near Blockchain is scalability and environment friendliness while utilising sharding. The Near Blockchain uses a proof of stake consensus to minimise energy consumption. The developers of the Near Blockchain collaborate with an organisation striving for climate solutions in facilitating carbon-neutral operations. The attention to the environmental friendliness of the Near blockchain is attracting crypto enthusiasts to the NearCon despite the blockchain being relatively new.
The Near blockchain is utilised in developing NFTs and other tokens. There are low transaction fees and instant speeds associated with trades on the Near blockchain with close to no network lags.
You require NEAR tokens to utilise the Near blockchain as it powers the protocol. The native token pays for transaction fees and storage space in the protocol. Developers running applications on the network appreciate this utility of the token as it can also facilitate computations on the Near blockchain. It has a total supply of 1 billion with the company increasing its supply by 5% each year while partially burning existing tokens to control its supply. The token is increasingly popular and is among the top 25 cryptocurrencies by market cap. Users can trade the native token in reputable cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, FTX, OKEx, ByBit, and CoinW.
Building Beyond the Hype
NearCon’s main theme for this year is Building Beyond the Hype to reiterate that Web3 and Near are long-term. Over 700 web3 ecosystem projects are on Near and the NearCon event displays its creativity and innovation. Developers shall also receive feedback on their work from the Near community.
